So the other night about 2 in the morning I get up and go downstairs to use the bathroom. The aging blogger. At the very bottom of the stairs was a fairly large dead rat. Rat problem in the neighborhood. My other cats were out at the time as it's been balmy lately and Sandy was downstairs and Gus my large tabby was upstairs. Had to be Sandy. She's been on rodent patrol the last few nights. Kitchen area by the water heater. Cats hear things and are very patient. Disposed of the rat then went back to bed. Glad to have felines in the house. No need to call Pest Control.
Some cat experts have theorized that the more cats become over-domesticated the less hunting skills they will have. Maybe play with a bug on a rug. Open to debate. I myself prefer a little wild left in the feline. If there's a rat in the house I want a cat who knows how to handle the situation. I never have any of my cats' nails trimmed either. As my vet said once that's their weapon so I risk the occasional accidental scratch. Also have plenty of scratchers to distract them from the furniture. Can always go to Bob's Discount Furniture if I have to.
We never adopted from a shelter although my sister in her condo does it that way. We get ours from off the street so to speak. They come around and if they're friendly enough we take them in and make the vet appointment. That's how we've done it down through the years although my current policy is no more as I'm managing five already.
Life on the feral side.
