The Royal Flush

Imagine if Donald Trump's lavish lifestyle were funded by the American taxpayer, Warren Buffet's sons were Princes and Oprah Winfrey were the Queen. American Royalty. Well that in a nut is the situation in the United Kingdom and you can't bitch and moan about tax cuts to the wealthy here and then get all misty-eyed about the celestial nuptials this Friday over there. Contradiction in terms, at least our well-to-do have earned their riches the honest ones anyway. Kate lost alot of weight, stress? William already has a receding hairline and I get the sense he's bored looking for things to do else why trek up the Arctic and have a dog outside your tent at night in case a polar bear is lurking? The roots of my conservatism are more primeval and explains my distaste for the Royal Welfare. It's not that I'm pro-work, not at all. Kyle Smith recently wrote a piece about why we love the rat race, I don't think so Kyle but if I have to suffer, if I have to work then so do the rest of you, princes and paupers alike. Get off your Royal Ass and get a job! They seem like nice enough kids though:)

  1. I guess the Royal family
    costs Britain about 41.5
million pounds a year. Its a very old tradition and apparently the Brits like it. I'm not sure it compares to our 'royalty'
    here, the sports heros and
MTV icons...but, as some note, ya get what ya pay
    fer....

  2. Really, why do they think we care about the British royal family? Is it to distract us from our crappy economic situation here in America?

  3. GOD I hate these people, the Queen Mum...It's amazing how people suck this up.

  4. Buckingham Palace, I know it's supposed to be the lap of luxury but it looks so existentially boring, no wonder the young'uns are going out of their minds. Usually money and fun go together but this bunch is too stately for my tastes. The Queen Mum always has to have a matching bonnet for her dress and the British public happily picks up the tab and we complain about the Donald!

  5. Were it not for British royalty, the works of Shakespeare would have been
    pretty miniscule....just sayin.

  6. I'm glad you brought that up because back in the day the King and Queen actually did something, actually ran a country. The Globe Theater and all that but what have they done for us lately? Why must this institution go on forever? It's like SNL, outlived its usefulness.

    Just sayin':)

  7. Back in the day, royalty did do stuff. Lot of responsibility, even an element of risk ...if the Brits
like the dudes on horses with the curiasses and plumes, the carriages (and as they are wont to say, all that tommyrot) and are willing to pay for it, why
not? Quite awhile back our taxes paid for Reagan's upgrade..the fife and drum guys with the red
    18th century outfits.
    Tradition, Z-man..tradition.

  9. "That's what museums are for." That's pragmatic.
    I like pragmatic. But...
tradition in a broad sense is about culture, and culture in a broad sense
is about we humans. Ever wonder why the Pope still wears a mitre, why soldiers salute, why there are thirteen alternating red and white strips on the US flag, why Aussies
say "g'day mate", why the Xhosa still speak a click
    language and why we can
easily spot a New Yorker from a Texan? Tradition,
    culture, human....
    but, I like pragmatic.

  10. All that is swell and I got no prob just simply saying the Royals need to get a job and work like the rest of us. They can still keep their tradition, I think that's great but get their hands a little dirty is all. It's their perpetual jobless state that bothers me and as a side it seems rather ironic that we fought a war and liberated ourselves from the yoke of the British in Washington's time and yet we can't seem to get enough of them now. Imperialism takes many forms I guess:)

  11. A lot of Americans are of English descent, and we have quite a bit in common with them..legal system, language, culture. I still
like the sound of the 12 cylinder Rolls-Royce Merlin
in a Spitfire making a low pass. Old sentimental guy,
I share a birthday with the queen. Pip pip cheerio, carry on old chap.
