I'd sooner read a tube of toothpaste

than read Barbara Walters' new book Audition which, during one interview on a radio station here, she said would make a wonderful Mother's Day gift. Every book has to have a hook to sell and hers is her Affair. I was never into Barbara Walters, she once famously asked Katherine Hepburn "if you were a tree what kind of tree would you be?" (oh I don't know, a weeping willow?) Never much was into celebrity worship anyway, hated those pre-Oscar specials where she'd chat up three big-time celebrities. I myself, if I met a celebrity today could care less to ask for their autograph, don't care if I have a mini-Mead memopad on me, that's for shopping lists and such. They all be so interesting during the Big Interview but I believe Don Rickles once said it best when he said of the famous they all go on the throne like us regular folk or words to that effect & don't bother those bigger bombshells, they of the golden, um, womb, 1/2 of 'em are already reserved for horndog crooner John Mayer anyway and kudos-cubed for ex-View co-host Star Jones' recent commentary on l'affaire Babs, it was refreshing. Now if she were to put the rest of her thoughts in print I'd be the first on line at Barnes&Noble.

  1. I am with you, Z, I don't understand the celebrity worship mentality, so everyone knows your face, big deal, would your blog be someplace I would visit every chance I get? Doubt it.

  2. Some celebrities are quite humble actually and you have to sort of hand it to them that readily admit that they're not that big of a deal. True they are few and far between but they do exist.

But yeah, I don't much understand the fascination with them. And the autograph thing....if you don't outgrow that by age 12 you've got some problems.

  3. It's a phony world, Hollywood, and deep in their hearts they all know it which is why they vote straight Democrat, it's their dubious connection to the little people, the average folk. Now I might admire an actor's craft and want to know a little bit about his life but that's it. Beth, you recently said there is an overexposure to the famous these days and that makes them seem like a member of our family and that leads me into my next thought...

  4. Why I found the UMA/Jack Jordan trial boring. Defining your life by a single event, Jack Jordan will forever be known as UMA's stalker, no political views, what careers was he good in? Makes him a one-dimensional character and so makes him boring. Now the trial was important to an extent but in the larger scheme of current world events it wasn't which made the trial boring, it all revolved around a goofy topic, his worship of her, it wasn't like it was overly newsworthy. Hopefully they can resolve these things in the future before trial and so spare us, the whole thing was like a Twinkie and while I like junk food from time to time you're not really sure what a Twinkie is. Beth said to me a Twinkie could probably survive a nuclear holocaust, lol.

  5. I am work but nobody is here right now, so I will try to get a few moments to say hello and comment.

Sometimes fame for stupid things such as that guys obsession is more annoying than regular celebrities indeed, I mean the poor guy is either crazy or immature, does it really need national coverage? Does Uma think it will keep others from trying the same thing? Does she think national exposure of her weird situation will help her overcome its weirdness? In Hollywood, who knows. Glad I am unknown!

  6. Imagine though having on your epitaph "UMA's stalker" and nothing else. Since he used to be a mental patient God knows what kind of meds he was on, assuming he was of course you don't know how they really alter your course of thinking and I'd think if the case has any relevance it'd be something like this. The whole thing seemed like a waste of time though, like maybe they could've resolved it like I said before going through the whole rigmarole of court, a plea deal so to speak if he agreed to not bother her anymore and get medical help again. Why go to court over a misdemeanor anyway? all a misdemeanor sentence of one year means is you are not really a lifetime threat (if he is make the sentences for such offenses that much longer) but you annoyed her, kind of sends a paradoxical message. Maybe the whole drama per se of going to court serves some kind of purpose in some people's eyes, who knows but I'd have to say if I were a juror I'd be bored out of my skull, like what kind of weird case did you give me and oh, I also have a word for Arianna Huffington...

  7. Our friend Babs recently asked her if there's a man in her life to which she replied "no, I'd have to fall in love first, it would have to be worthwhile." This has been one of many running themes at my blog, I agree wholeheartedly with her sentiments and maybe she's been reading my blog 'cause this issue of should I fall in love first or just speed-date people indiscriminately has become a kind of hot topic of late. Her credo seems more rational and normal and healthy to me instead of subjecting yourself to the endless pitfalls and pratfalls of constant dating ("he never called me back, men are such pigs!" BORING, don't wanna hear it anymore ladies).

  8. Never been on jury duty myself but it would be my luck to get a case like this.

I'm home from work, and thinking you must be off today, Z.

  9. You guessed right, bought some DVDs, ate at Stop 'n' Shop and am devoting as much of the rest of the day I can to the fine art of blogging. Reason I'd never want to be on a jury is not only is it an inconvenience and people argue but there are many times, years down the road even, when jurors regret their past consensus, most often in big cases where some guy goes to prison for years and is later found innocent. I believe most people have to go but I also heard some groups or people get exemptions and I think the pay is still dirt cheap to compensate you for your time away from work (although depending on your job this could be a silver lining).

  10. You know the inconsistency for me is that while I have a very strong anti-celebrity bias you could call it I still love a good movie. At FYE (For Your Entertainment) they have a good selection of cheaply priced movies, 3 for $20 and so I bought "Mean Girls" starring Tina Fey, reviews said it was great so what? it's only a few bucks down the drain. So I say keep cranking out the movies (good ones that is) but please spare us the personal mishegas if you can help it.

  11. I will have to remember to tape Hell's Kitchen tonight so we can discuss tomorrow.

  12. Sure, a good movie can really take your mind off the daily grind, without altering your mind like drugs!

  13. "Hell's Kitchen" pushes up so close to my bedtime and soapie's probably turned in by then, sometimes you forget it's on and then it's 1/2 over. You said a good movie does not alter your mind like drugs, too bad so many producers are on drugs. I sure hope the celebrity stalker trial is coming to an end soon, Sheryl Crow had one, who else? then you have your same-sexers like that "priest" guy following Conan O'Brien around, like why would he be so interesting in the first place? like what are they supposed to go bowling or something? Z's movie recommendation, "Masquerade" from the 80's starring Rob Lowe, Meg Tilly and Kim Catrall, all the more if you like sailing (***).

  14. I always appreciate book and movie recommendations.

  15. Guess I won't stress if I forget to tape Hell's Kitchen then...

  16. I kinda think it should start around 8 for geezers like soapie and me but that would run afoul of the Family Hour I guess. "Masquerade" is rated R, not for kids, but I really like the storyline which is basically the Rob Lowe character is in on this plot to fall in love with the Meg Tilly character who's born into a rich family but then kill her to reap a fortune between himself and two partners only thing is he can't really do it because he really falls in love with her...ooops, giving too much away already!

  18. I am catching the end of HK, and I must say the patrons of that restaurant must know not to come too hungry. But sheesh, I am surprised that chef guy doesn't bust a vein screaming the way he does.

I did notice that you can watch full episodes online.

  19. I was in the kitchen last night getting a bite to eat and all I heard was this endless bleeping.

  20. You can eat during that show?!?

  21. Lite snacks like Cheeze-its (the cheddar and parmesan mix), some pepper jack on a few Ritz, a leftover liverwurst slice or two, nothing heavy. Get a little aftertase going and you're back for more after you've brushed your teeth, oh brush 'em again...wait a minute, are they baby tomatoes I see?
