The latest celebrity tragedy
While not an epidemic exactly more and more Hollywood stars have gone off the deep end of late as in over the cliff - Heath Ledger, Philip Seymour Hoffman and now Robin Williams (1951-2014 RIP). Of course the truism holds "money can't buy you happiness" but there are deeper forces at work as there always are - drugs and/or alcohol abuse, depression etc. I kinda think the Bieber and Charlie Sheen antics are all for show, they're actually the least likely to off themselves in some fashion. There was a period of time when almost every movie I watched it seemed had Robin Williams in some kind of starring role. With him what comes to mind is not just a great actor but versatile. To go from comedy to high drama ain't easy, can't imagine Will Ferrell doing that. The last one I watched I think was Insomnia with him and Al Pacino. Suicide imo is the most undignified way to go but ok so we have something to talk about besides Ebola and those immigrant kids. Thoughts? You can even blame Obama if you like:)

There seem to be as many theories about comedians as there are comedians. How did they relate to parents, to peers, why are they compelled to make people laugh and why are so many depressed, etc. I was reading through a British study on the topic which ended thus:
ReplyDelete"It all brings to mind the story of the man who goes to see his doctor. He tells him he is depressed, feels lonely and anxious.
"Do you know the best thing you can do?" says the doctor. "Go to the circus and watch the great clown. He will make you laugh and you'll feel much better."
The man bursts into tears. "But doctor," he says. "I am the clown."
I never heard that one before. Are we allowed to tell Polish jokes?
ReplyDeleteThe latest wiki update on Robin Williams says there is something called protracted withdrawal syndrome. In other words as you're slowly getting all the alcohol out of your system severe depression and suicidal feelings may increase. However what do we always rely on? The AA Model of cold turkey. I've long maintained it is better for many to learn to drink in moderation instead.
ReplyDeleteThe Yazidi people, the ones chased up onto the mountain in Iraq. Had to look them up. They are descendants of the ancient Assyrians of Nineveh (biblical place, at one time the largest city in the world). Their religion is an old tribal nature gods thing
ReplyDeletewith additions of Muslim/Zoroastrian/Christian/Gnostic elements, to wit- they believe
the chief angel, Melik Taus (the peacock angel), runs affairs on earth. They cannot wear anything blue. Some of this same ethnic stock are Armenian Orthodox Christians. ISIS considers the whole bunch 'devil worshippers'. IMO, Dark Age stuff, and we are holding off ISIS with fighter-bombers and trying to rescue the Yasidi.
Dunno, Z-Man, how do we get into this stuff?
Polish Joke (which also involves a blond and a priest)
"A blonde was telling a priest a Polish joke,
when halfway through the priest interrupts her,
"Don't you know I'm Polish?"
"Oh, I'm sorry," the blonde apologizes,
"Do you want me to start over and talk slower?
I'm really quite tired with the neocon commentary on Obama and the Yazidis. He inherited Bush's mess and as such he's doing the best he can imo. Hillary also has her fangs out.
DeleteThe thought occurred Ayn Rand was a philosophical Judge Judy and I have no use for either. How cool is this, I had exactly 99 cents in my Google Play balance so I browsed their books and "Twelve Years a Slave" was exactly the same amount. Good enough.
ReplyDeleteHmm, probably an omen. You got any lottery tickets?
DeleteMy favorite app of late is the Weather Channel. This app rocks!
