MTG - The canary in the coal mine?

I had to google what this phrase meant.  Half of me is off the top of my head knowledge the rest of the time I'm a Captain Google.  They're saying there will be more Republican resignations to come as Trump has made a toxic stew out of modern politics.  Re his historically low approval ratings I would submit a large percentage of those surveyed are not what you would call anti-Trumpers to begin with but rather people who feel he's not remotely doing anything they voted for.  The rest of the core group is what I would call the dwindling number of true believers basically a political cult at this point.  These are the people who will leave the Trump bumper stickers on their cars and pickups like my neighbor.  Trump worship.  I'd be too embarrassed.

  1. Gotta wonder about those coal mine canaries. Do they wear hardhats? Do they turn blue from carbon monoxide? Do they go on strike for more seed? With Trump everything is driven by revenge and retribution. Hardly the stuff of inspired leadership. Along with the canary, we are reminded of rats abandoning the sinking ship. Political bumper stickers - when i visited the Eisenhower Library in Kansas, I drove off with "I liked Ike-Hell I even liked Truman" sticker on the pickup bumper. Out in Idaho the best seller is "My kid can beat up your honor student", although "Honk if you've never seen an
Uzi fired from a car window"

  2. Trump planning a land invasion of Venezuela soon? Seems to have forgotten about Greenland.

  3. "After 1898, the Monroe Doctrine was reinterpreted by lawyers and intellectuals as promoting multilateralism and non-intervention. In 1933, under President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the United States affirmed this new interpretation," It goes without saying that Trump thought it was Marylin Monroe, not James Monroe. That giant fleet invading the rotting jungles is better than invading US cities, though.

  4. The coal mine canary says -
"Monday, several other House Republicans are considering leaving their post in the middle of the current term over frustrations with the Trump White House and Speaker Mike Johnson. “This entire White House team has treated ALL members like garbage,” a senior GOP member messaged Punchbowl. “And Mike Johnson has let it happen because he wanted it to happen.”

“The arrogance of this White House team is off-putting to members who are run roughshod and threatened,” the member added, saying that Republican lawmakers have little hope of maintaining the House majority they held on to in 2024. They predicted more high-profile resignations, and that Johnson would lose his gavel. “Morale has never been lower.”

  5. I don't recall going to war against Venezuela coming up in the campaign. Or Nigeria or......folks didn't vote for any of this stuff.

  6. I don't recall Republicans wanting to quit under Reagan. I don't recall Dems wanting to quit under Obama. Kind of unprecedented imo.

  7. Pondering if Harris had won. Gaza, Ukraine, Venezuela, tariffs, health insurance, cost of living etc. Pretty sure Greenland and revenge were not on her bucket list. Thoughts? Me neither.

  8. Pondering the same thing lately. Could've also gotten one of them flexible forgivable loans.

  9. Doing some online shopping lately. Mostly a positive experience but my definition of QuickShip seems to differ from their idea of QuickShip. Like where is my item?

    1. Ordered Prince Albert this AM. Comes from outside Washington DC and takes around 8-9 days. Daughter left to go back to Kansas. Delta to Seattle (wrong way), then Seattle to Kansas City. Old cat Mikey, skinny and arthritic, has finally turned into a lap cat. Used to attack visitors, thinking he was a guard dog, I guess.

  10. Kamala as POTUS. She could've still been bad but for different reasons. She's not a default answer here but the difference is Trump has taken bad to a whole new level. We've almost reached the pass where almost anybody else would have been preferable.

  12. Trump upset about Senators informing soldiers can disobey illegal orders. They can, ever since the Nuremburg Trials where German officers claimed "I was just following orders' after gassing and burning thousands of Jewish prisoners. Big dudes - Keitel, Jodl, Kaltenbrunner etc. But SCOTUS claims Trump immune for giving illegal orders. What's a PFC to do?. It goes without saying that Trump wants those senators (all vets) executed. What's PFC to do?

  15. I think I'll stick with the cats. My sister has an African Gray Parrot. She said she got out of the shower once and the bird goes "you're fat." Another time she bent over to get something and he says "you have a fat ass." Her condo has thin walls and he was talking about Jews once. The ferals are easy.

  18. Interesting link but don't know that I agree. Broad brush. Complicated. Might be more along the lines of a political bunker mentality. The other side is worse etc. Also our side won so we can't admit we're wrong in any way. Thanks. Good food for thought.

  19. The idea that elites control things isn't far-fetched at all imo but that's another subject.

  20. Probably has been since the Stone Age. Where MTG came from?

  21. People in power control things. Not even a conspiracy theory anymore. It's self-obvious if I may coin a phrase.

  22. Trump pardons ex-Honduras President who was serving a 45 year sentence for being part of a smuggling ring that sent 400 tons of cocaine into the US. Claims Biden lied about it and framed him.
Meanwhile Trump is blowing fishing boats out of the ocean and sending an invasion fleet to Venezuela. WTF?

  23. Totally off the rails but I want to flip it. Let's say we had a good strong liberal Dem that became president but once in office slowly went off the rails like Trump. How long would you and your fellow Dems support him? Takes awhile is all I'm saying.

    1. Trump was "off the rails" before he became president. My guess if a Dem prez did that, he would lose the congress mid term, not be able to stack SCOTUS and leave the East Wing of the White House alone?

    2. Kind of skirted my point but today all the news is about Pete "Double Tap" Hegseth. Even Republicans are calling for an investigation. Will Admiral Bradley be prosecuted with Hegseth? Depressing times.

  27. Mrs. took her car in. Cruise control quit and alarm messages about her brakes kept going off. So far they have done $2000 worth of stuff and are looking for a buy on rear gear case and struts. She is borrowing it back from them today to go get her hair done. Is a hair job cheaper?

  28. Hair jobs have gone up but definitely cheaper. Has she considered a bicycle?

  29. On Dec 2, 1942 the first sustained nuclear chain reactor started up in a big basement under the University of Chicago. Enrico Fermi's first success. Ol Enrico was a hoot. He left to set up the Plutonium production process at Hanford, WA (I got a tour there some years back) and while there, swam a mile in one of the canals. He was at the first A-Bomb test, and while others were rubbing their eyes, he did some quick slips on his sliderule and announced "Hmm, 23 kilotons TNT equivalent. You heard it hear and can lord it over the other chefs

  30. Saw a TV ad for 'Alien Tape'. Looks super, powerful and since it is made by Aliens, probably delivered by UFO during the Equinox. Checked the customer reviews and it is horrible. I've been alienated.

  32. Did Trump want to build a dam over Niagara Falls, but Big Oil made a huge contribution?
