Why people are threatened by miracles (or the bias against miracles)

A miracle strongly implies a God, a God in turn we suspect has a moral code for us to follow, a moral code means we have to make a decision in the end for either Heaven or Hell, damnation or salvation. To someone who ain't livin' right they will go to the ends of the earth to disprove the most obvious miracles, he isn't into them and so to be into them means he would have to turn his life around. The next question becomes maybe miracles are more common than we realize but we'd rather not go there so we downplay them or rationalize them away so we can continue with the life we've been accustomed to. If Science can't explain it then that means we have to throw the porn away or the drugs or not get another abortion sometime down the road or be nice to our neighbor or give up our seat on the bus to some elderly woman with a limp. The atheist can't be bothered with Fatima even though it's the most fascinating subject because the implications are disturbing at least for him.

A pet peeve of mine -- Intelligent Design is NOT, I repeat not Creationism. All it says is there is a Prime Mover behind it all, a Creative Imagination but has nothing to do with the literal seven days of Creation as described in the Book of Genesis. I can only think this is a quite deliberation obfuscation among liberals and it's getting old. I DO believe a sublime force made the cosmos, I don't however believe in talking snakes. Get it right!!

  1. I do believe in a higher power but cannot understand why bad things happen to good people and vice versa, I know I am not alone in my wondering.

  2. When I was younger, I used to watch Oral Roberts do his faith healing on TV. On a par with pro wrestling, but perhaps a chance of placebo effect. Readlily adaptable to New Age stuff, fraud...call me a cranky sceptic. (I know a person who makes big $$$ 'channeling' personal angels). OK, call me cheap as well...

  3. Old Oral, not the best example. Truth be told scratch the surface of a miracle denier and you'll find a good old-fashioned liberal probably with liberal sexual mores. A large part of the population is not receptive to anything miraculous. The truly miraculous gets lumped in with anything New Age, old trick.

  4. Z-man, there are days when I think the sun rising is a miracle, and others days (lately) I feel like there are none anymore, and when it seems like we need them more than ever. Maybe the miracle is that there is anyone who believes in God anymore, with all the bad stuff that goes on.

  5. I haven't reached that point yet. It's a great life if you don't weaken.

  7. Speaking personally I am more in tune with the tragic by which I mean put 10 people in a room and 8 of them are happy-go-lucky leading charmed lives but the last 2 have had everything ranging from problems to personal tragedy and I can relate to them more, I feel their pain more than the others' happiness. I'm not a sullen person by nature but I am rather serious just the same, grave demeanor at times and I think as the late humorist Mike Royko once observed happy people don't get it, if they did they wouldn't be happy all the time, they don't know what's going on and that's why they're happy. I'd rather ease the pain of the unhappy ones rather than dance with a lampshade on my head on top of the table with the perpetually cheery.

  8. Not taking to task BB here btw just want to focus on the more respectable miraculous phenomenon here from a scientific standpoint and those preachers in those polyester suits, well we can spend all day rapping about them. OK just over the newswire Farrah Fawcett has just passed away at 62 so WHY do some miracles happen and most others never take place? WHAT is the missing ingredient? or is it just capriciousness and whimsy on God's part? I'd like to figure it out myself as these things have a tendency to bug me over time. Are the few people who are recipients of miracles somehow more special? I'm not getting it.

  10. I'm just serious is all though I do have my flippy backside. I just think Life is more serious than the happiness-mongers make it out to be and I just see more the Bigger Picture.
