A part-time nation with health insurance
This is pretty much what the social/economic landscape is gonna look like when ObamaCare gets fully rolled out. Gold, silver or bronze plan your choice. On the plus side you'll be covered you just might not be able to afford the latest smartphone or HDTV. Look full-time work can exacerbate your illnesses and ailments, better to Kindle with a mug of hot cocoa and rest your back. I've been wondering of late though if HillaryCare would've been any better or maybe they're the same thing. Happy exchange shopping - is there an app for that?

Of course there's an App for Obamacare. Is it just me, or are there more apps than smartphones?
ReplyDeleteThere's even apps for cheating on your spouse. Still waiting for that colonoscopy app.
ReplyDelete...more leisure time AND health insurance, you can't beat it!
ReplyDeleteI got all the leisure time and health insurance I need. No apps though.
ReplyDeleteDespite the Administration explaining how ObamaCare will make your life better, despite the msm being largely behind it, despite community forums explaining the finer points of the ACA the public is STILL widely against it by at least 10 pts. in the latest poll.
ReplyDeleteWhen they call it Obamacare people are against it. When they call it ACA they support it. The public is lied to daily by the GOP about it. People who have it are happy.
ReplyDeleteThat doesn't explain the consistent public polling over time.
ReplyDeleteThe public is lied to daily by the GOP about it.
ReplyDeleteThat does.
So with all the myriad sources of info @their fingertips the Public only reads the GOP lies?
DeleteThe opinions have nothing to do with healthcare and everything to do with politics:
ReplyDelete"But a CNN/ORC International poll released Monday also indicates that more than a quarter of those who oppose the law, known by many as Obamacare, say they don't support the measure because it doesn't go far enough.
According to the poll, 43% of the public says it supports the health care law, a figure that's mostly unchanged in CNN polling since the measure was passed in 2010 by a Congress then controlled by Democrats and signed into law by President Barack Obama. Fifty-four percent of those questioned say they oppose the law, also relatively unchanged since 2010.
The survey indicates that 35% oppose the health care law because it's too liberal, with 16% saying they oppose the measure because it isn't liberal enough.
The wide partisan divide over the law remains. Nearly three quarters of Democrats say they favor the Affordable Care Act. That number drops to 16% among Republicans."
Already tens of thousands of self-employed Americans have received insurance notices dropping their coverage. The Law of Unintended Consequences.
ReplyDeleteA valuable lesson in propaganda can be learned from Goebbels, who iterated the truth that if one repeats a lie over and over as loudly as possible, people will believe it.
ReplyDeleteThis became startlingly evident at the last election, when the GOP were truly stunned by their loss. They were victims of their own propaganda campaigns; they bought into their own fraudulent hype.
From minute one, the GOP has vociferously repeated lie after lie about the ACA, from death panels to rationing to abortion surcharges that don't exist. The average American hears the loudest voices over and over and comes to believe what he hears, regardless of the ridiculousness or improbability or genuine idiocy of the statements.
More likely the proponents of ObamaCare have lost in the marketplace of ideas. Look all the information and different POVs are out there, people have considered it all and a significant majority of the public still opposes it. Woman at work and her husband are being dropped by their insurance and will probably be dumped on one of those exchanges. That's not propaganda and hype that's real life. BTW why does everyone like to use Nazi analogies these days? you don't like your mailman he's a Nazi.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen the GOP alternative. I guess its 'back to the good old way'?
ReplyDeleteAs I recall, in the event of a Gov't shutdown, be sure to drink plenty of water....
I am sick of the yearly crisis in Washington. BTW had the greatest Barilla spaghetti & meatballs last night.
ReplyDeleteI never made an analogy to anyone being a Nazi. Goebbels and the Nazis in general were some of the greatest propagandists in the history of politics. A lot can be learned about how to manipulate public opinion by reading Mein Kampf. That being said, people haven't considered it, they don't know what it contains, they believe the screaming headlines, and that's it, that's propaganda, that's hype, that's a Senator getting on the radio and complaining that people have to pay an 'abortion surcharge' that does not even exist and has been debunked, it is conservatives over and over and over again pushing myths on the public that have been debunked a thousand times and it doesn't stop them. How have we gone all this time and people still believe Obama wasn't born in Hawaii, even with the tons of evidence? People believe those things that support their preconceptions, and they hear the same lies preached over and over again and that's what they want to believe. The NRA goes on about how Americans don't want gun control when 90% of THEIR OWN MEMBERS disagree. It's all about how loudly can you yell your lies.
ReplyDeleteFolks pick up liberal newspapers everyday and read them with their morning cup of joe. There's MSNBC...what are you talking about? So the liberal labor unions are lying about losing their multi-employer plans?
ReplyDelete& is Harry Reid helping matters by calling folks who disagree with him anarchists? I mean what kind of smack is that?
ReplyDeleteShutting the gov't down IS a tad anarchic. Tea Party must have a wonderful amazing alternative to the ACA. What is it, exactly?
ReplyDeleteGet sick. Die. Game over.
ReplyDeleteYours is yesterday's analysis. The opposition to ObamaCare is a bit more diverse these days broader than any tea party. Had a funny thought, Obama himself could say the ACA is bad and yet the two of you would still be for it. BB look the word "anarchist" up in Webster's will ya?
ReplyDeleteHere's a link to a piece on WorldNetDaily today:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/bachmann-obama-peddling-crack-cocaine-dependency
Shall we go through line by line and list all the bullshit separately or will you be honest enough to admit that this is the type of thing the Glenn Beck people and the Limbaugh people and all those people who listen to Fox News hear every day and believe like it's gospel?
Or will you continue to believe the pipe dream that people aren't excited about finally getting some access to healthcare for themselves, their kids, their preexisting problems that meant they couldn't have health insurance before?
I will continue to believe the swath of the American public that opposes ObamaCare is broader than this.
DeleteAnarchist: a person who promotes disorder or excites revolt against any established rule, law, or custom.
ReplyDeleteWorld English Dictionary
Deleteanarchist (ˈænəkɪst)
— n
1. a person who advocates the abolition of government and a social system based on voluntary cooperation
Anarchist - e.g. Al Sharpton, OWS.
DeleteAnd here's a real life example of the changes happening with the ACA (since comments were magically shut down on the post I originally put this on)
ReplyDeleteAnd as a direct result of the ACA my coverage has significantly improved, many medications are now covered at 100% which weren't before and my premium has gone from $21 to $13. Monthly. And there are also significant new coverage options. I'm sticking with the 80/20 plan I've had.
Comments magically shut down? At 100+ comments on a war post I'm just trying to be more mobile friendly.
DeleteAin't it just ducky how you can use the force of government to get other people to subsidize you?
ReplyDeleteYour advocacy of this practice is immoral. You're so blinded by the adoration of Obama and the ACA that you can't even begin to imagine the unseen; things that will never be because money was taken from some to give to others by force.
Dave Miller announced he is shutting down his blog. Too bad, IMO.
ReplyDeleteBecause not caring about what happens to other people as long as your own ass gets what it wants is cool.
ReplyDeleteWell isn't that precisely what you are doing? Getting what your own ass wants (subsidized health care) and not caring about from whence the funds come from?
ReplyDeleteShortsighted you are. Immensely shortsighted.
Compassion young padawan does not come by way of robbing Peter to pay Paul. No. No it doesn't.
Compassion and "care" come in the form of genuinely doing of your own volition. It doesn't require anything from anyone other than yourself.
Check your premises.
The insurance pool I am in is the North Carolina State Employees and Teachers... an enormous group of people; hence, by pooling all that risk, prices come down for everyone involved.
DeleteGot this on Fox News, Z...
ReplyDelete1. ACA allows young Americans to stay on their parents’ insurance plans
Because of ObamaCare, which allows kids to stay on their parents insurance plans until age 26, 3.4 million young Americans now have coverage.
The percentage of uninsured young people (ages 19 to 25) fell accordingly, from 48% in 2010 to 21% in 2012.
According to polling, three-in-four Americans support this part of the Affordable Care Act including, yes, over two-thirds of Republicans.
2. ACA bans insurance companies from denying coverage for pre-existing conditions
Another aspect of ObamaCare that has already taken effect is the ban on insurance companies denying coverage to patients based on pre-existing conditions.
That means an end to insurance company horror stories like four-month-old Alex Lange being denied health insurance because he was too chubby.
This is why the conservative allegation about death panels is so ironic; while the actual ACA law does not contain death panels or anything remotely like them, the fact is that prior to ObamaCare, insurance companies were effectively operating like death panels in denying life-saving coverage to anyone with a pre-existing condition and by applying life-time spending caps on coverage.
The ban on pre-existing condition limits, which will apply to every single American by 2014, is supported by 83% of Americans.
3. ACA offers tax credits to small businesses to buy insurance
The Affordable Care Act expands tax credits to help small businesses provide health insurance to their workers. Companies with fewer than 50 employees do not have to provide insurance, but even for these businesses, ObamaCare will make it easier and cheaper if they choose to do so.
According to polling, 88% of Americans these small business tax credits are great, including — wait for it ... yes, 83% of Republicans. That’s right, over eight-in-ten Republicans support the provision of ObamaCare that helps small businesses afford and expand their health insurance offerings to employees.
4. ACA requires companies with more than 50 employees to provide health insurance
ReplyDeleteOver 96% of companies with more than 50 employees already provide health insurance to their employees. And contrary to Republicans claiming otherwise, studies show the vast majority of those employers do not plan to drop or reduce that coverage because of ObamaCare.
Also, there is no evidence that ObamaCare has led to companies slashing full-time workers. In fact, since ObamaCare passed in March 2010, over 90% of the gain in employment has been full-time positions.
Still, we know that companies that can afford to provide health insurance to their workers and yet fail to do so off-set the costs of care onto the rest of us — whether the cost of emergency room treatment that gets passed on to other consumers, or Medicaid coverage that we pay for as taxpayers.
In Florida alone, more than 50,000 workers at companies like McDonald’s and Burger King are on the state’s Medicaid rolls. Especially with tax credits available to small businesses, there is no excuse for companies to pass the buck. And 75% of Americans support this element of ObamaCare.
5. ACA provides subsidies to help individuals afford coverage
Many of the 45 million Americans who lack health insurance simply don’t have enough money to afford coverage. ObamaCare will lower the cost of premiums but also provide subsidies to help low- and middle-income Americans purchase insurance.
Americans who earn $45,000 per year (about 400% of the federal poverty level) will qualify for some form of subsidy. The amount of the subsidy will be based on income as well as the cost of health coverage in a particular state but, for instance, according to a subsidy calculator created by the Kaiser Family Foundation, a 27-year-old living in Houston, Texas, who earns just $15,000 a year could sign-up for a mid-level plan for about $300 per year with the help of subsidies. Without subsidies, that plan would cost $2,400 per year.
The few Americans who think subsidizing care is a bad idea should, again, note that we already subsidize health care to a far greater degree in the form of Medicaid and also when the uninsured rely on free emergency room care and pass those astronomical costs on to the rest of us. But most Americans — 76% to be exact — support the individual subsidy. That includes 61% of Republicans.
According to Investor's Business Daily about 300 companies have cut hours and bennies due to ObamaCare.
DeleteDon't know about you, but I'd quit a company that has that low an opinion about the people that make it run. Why do workers put up with the crap, Z-Man?
DeleteLike I said... what happens with the Republicans is that they choose a lie, all stand behind it and yell it as loudly as possible over and over every chance they get. And so people believe it. This is a classic lesson in propaganda. The problem with the GOP is that they end up believing their own hype, and then when something totally obvious and foreseen happens (like Romney losing, or the public blaming the GOP for the shutdown), they're honestly sideswiped because they were so busy believing in their own lies that they didn't see the train coming.
DeleteI've checked this with at least three, count 'em three sources who work in the supermarket industry and ALL THE MAJOR SUPERMARKET CHAINS in this country have slashed part-timers' hours to under 30 because of the employer mandate under ObamaCare. That's not right-wing propaganda or hype that's checking your FACTS.
DeleteAs to your point BB why do workers put up with that crap it's amazing to me how many workers when things keep getting worse they just acquiesce and accept it all. Some don't, they have the good sense to move on but the ones who dutifully if not gladly accept the crap doled out to them everyday by upper mgt. I've seen it firsthand and can't really explain it unless it's a combination of Stockholm Syndrome and too lazy to go on job interviews or lack of knowledge to go in a different career direction. Sad really:)
Delete"ACA bans insurance companies from denying coverage for pre-existing conditions"
ReplyDeleteThereby defeating the entire purpose of insurance which is pricing risk. You don't purchase home owner's insurance after the entire first floor is engulfed in flames. Der....
The entire purpose of private sector insurance is to make a profit. One of the reasons health insurance contracts consist of a small book of small
Deleteprint.
A small book of small print? The ACA is at least 1,000 pages long, that's the length of a typical Stephen King novel in his prime and many who voted for it didn't even read the dang thing.
Deletejust sayin':)
So basically Joe Hansen and the UFCW have it wrong?
ReplyDeleteMedical coverage for a ball rub. Somewhere Dr. Fa Lee is crying.
ReplyDeleteHere's a perfect example of continuing to push blatant lies, today from Fox News:
ReplyDeleteOctober 1: Private health care ends, socialism begins
That's a headline. Now call me kooky, but my insurance and lots of other people's I know is still being run by private, for profit corporations. Additionally, another blatant lie in the article is talking about standalone physician practices. In the real world, it's has been getting more and more rare over the last 20 years to see a physician in a solo practice, and that's because malpractice insurance costs are so high. By banding together in a practice they can get the group rate (oh my God, does this sound somewhat familiar?) and bring down costs for all of them.
So, again.. scream the propaganda even as the ship goes down.
Well the Government shut down today. Obama, what a nitwit!
ReplyDeleteShutdown what? It's still robbing, stealing, enslaving, bombing....a park was left without a fucking ranger or two. Big deal.
ReplyDeleteYou got enslaved by a park ranger?
DeleteObama the nitwit? Really? I mean, seriously, really?
ReplyDeleteThe man refused to negotiate at the end, just wanted to score polemical points.
DeleteNegotiate? The law was passed and approved by all 3 branches of US
Deletegovernment. Keep in mind that the 22% that are Tea Party Zealots do
not rule this country, They can try to foul it up in the meantime...and perhaps when they reach 50% they can foul it up forever. Cruz ya Lose.
I almost think Obama wanted the government to shut down so he can blame Republicans and the msm would simply parrot this.
DeleteAnd it's a big damn deal to the 800K people who are on furlough. I understand that they don't matter to you, though.
ReplyDeletePar for the course.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone seriously think Leviathan is inactive? He has one eye open checking your e-mail. So you can't take a tour of the Grand Canyon right now.
ReplyDelete"Well the Government shut down today. Obama, what a nitwit!"
ReplyDeleteYeah, right; should just let Ted Cruz run the place. Give Teddy his binkie and maybe he will go back to Texas. Cruz ya lose.
The man is standing on principle like your beloved Wendy Davis. Politics is hardcore at times, it's not a bunch of old ladies sitting around discussing Sue Grafton's latest.
DeleteDo you get paid to come up with these comments, Z? Because I can't imagine you actually believing that shit.
ReplyDelete$50 a comment, it's a sweet gig. Hannity uses the new Chase App to pop me the money.
DeleteYou've heard of shapeshifters. Obama is a blameshifter and Harry Reid is his enabler.
ReplyDeleteSo I'm watching the evening news before and they're all treating some family being turned away at a national park as some sort of tragedy. Those furloughed workers, you work for the Gov't what do you expect?
ReplyDeleteTurned away? Shades of WallyWorld!
DeleteMeanwhile-
Delete""At the National Institutes of Health, nearly three-quarters of the staff was furloughed. One result: director Francis Collins said about 200 patients who otherwise would be admitted to the NIH Clinical Center into clinical trials each week will be turned away. This includes about 30 children, most of them cancer patients, he said."
..30 kids won't get a last chance. Newtown: 90% people want gunshow checks. Naw, GOP not interested in kids (unless they are fetuses)
So here's where it gets polemical and manipulative on the Obamaites' part. The House Republicans are trying every day to pass measures to reopen the various branches of government they deem important enough to keep operating and yet Mr. Obama keeps vetoing those measures. The NIH has furloughed nearly 75% of its staff? take it up with the President BB.
DeleteThe House offered to fund Vet's benefits, the Nat'l Parks and some museums. The Senate rejected that. I would shut down every airport,
Deletesave a ton of money and make those who want no government happy.
These folks want to negotiate: that would just make them greedier-
"The following is a list of things that have been, at various times, demanded by Republicans under threat of a government shutdown or default:
1. A balanced budget amendment
2. Approving Keystone XL
3. Eliminating funding for Planned Parenthood
4. Medicare privatization
5. Tax reform, as outlined by Paul Ryan
6. The REINS Act, which would require Congress to approve significant Federal regulations
7. Means-testing Social Security
8. Defunding Obamacare
9. Allowing employers to eliminate insurance coverage for birth control
10. An expansion of off-shore drilling
11. Preserving all the Bush tax cuts
12. "Trillions" in budget cuts
13. Slashing funding for food stamps
14. Protecting mountaintop strip mining
15. Stripping the EPA of authority to regulate greenhouse gases
16. Loosening regulation on coal ash
17. Delaying Obamacare implementation by one year
18. Repealing a tax on medical devices
19. Eliminating Social Service Block Grants
20. Expanding drilling on federal lands
21. Restricting the child tax credit"
I keep wondering where these Benghazi wunderkinds were when we
lost thousands in the Twin Towers and went right to war with the wrong country.
Double standards BB. From Rich Lowry's "The Obama Care Fight is Just Beginning" (9/30):
Delete"Democrats now expect Republicans to salute smartly, accept the 'law of the land'...If this were a consistent principle rather than opportunistic advice Democrats would have been content to leave 'don't ask, don't tell' in place and never would have agitated to repeal the Bush tax cuts out of deference to duly constituted policy and law."
'salute smartly'? That would be a new one. Is Lowry saying the Dems shut down the gov't to reduce Bush tax cuts? As far as I know, they didn't, just saluted smartly and we still have them. IMO, Lowry is a pretty
Deletedecent fellow, kind of surprised he would weigh in on the Cruz schmooze.
Been around a few libertarian blogs and they are basking in the clear-bashing both sides with glee. My prof daughter is involved with a big
'women in science' thing for Jr. High girls this week. They had to really
shuffle their offerings when NIH, FBI, FDA, NAID and CDC scientists had to opt out. Salute smartly, life goes on.
I think Lowry's point is that it's perfectly natural to agitate against laws you don't like. OK so the Dems didn't shut the Gov't down over the Bush tax cuts but you could say they did everything they could just short of that point. It was a popular topic remember? Lowry's point is when people say just accept the Law of the Land, I mean who really does that? ban abortion tomorrow and see what happens.
DeleteYou expect the government to do its job and pay its bills, not hold an entire country's economy hostage over a four year old law that you've already tried 43 times to vote down and FAILED. You expect the government to behave like grownups, not like a bunch of dumbass whiny children stamping their feet. I'm going to go with the excuse that you get paid to say these things, because I refuse to believe that you actually believe the things you're putting in the comments. Has Beth hacked your account?
ReplyDeleteObama constantly shifting the blame and failing to take personal responsibility, that's not a good example and tone to set for our young people. Re the about 800,000 furloughed workers the way I see it is Government is by its very nature dysfunctional, it's a fickle whore so if you choose to work for the Government you should know what to expect going in. Maybe these folks should work for the Private Sector.
ReplyDeleteOf course... blame the individuals, it's their fault for working for the Fed, so we don't have to care..... a recurring meme on the Right.
DeleteThat's actually not what I meant. I made that point because I think it bolsters the whole anti-government argument, gov't is dysfunctional and this is what may happen if you choose to work for it. Another point is under a libertarian system I don't think the government would shut down. It'd be minimal and it would function better.
DeleteWhat a collosal waste of time and breathe to discuss suspending the Government operations that we don't need, because we can't agree on how to spend the imaginary money which we don't have.
ReplyDeleteAre some IRS offices actually closed? Damn!
ReplyDeleteA friend of mine who works at the Federal Prison in Butner NC is currently working for free. If you don't show up, you're fired. I'm standing with the hypothesis that Beth has hacked your account.
ReplyDeleteApparently gov't shutdowns weren't that big a deal in the Tip O'Neill era.
ReplyDeleteIf a Libertarian state were possible we would have surely by now have a practical real world example of it which all Libertarians would gleefully hold up as a utopian goal for us to strive towards. Alas for said Libertarians none do exist, and why? Because it is a theoretical construct that functions only in dreams and fictions. It is untenable and unworkable in the reality of running any group larger than say ten people. In the context of a nation of 300 million it becomes delusional. Perhaps too much pot-smoking.
ReplyDeleteIf the die-hard libertarians controlled an area (which they wouldn't-they despise control) it would not be a state. Just terrain where people lived.
DeleteClearly the 'communities' would be isolated and property would be sacrosanct. There would be no law and the ideal would be every man for
himself. We may guess the nature of homo sapiens that like the Great Plains Indians of a few centuries back, tribal warfare would be incessant.
...there are people that like the idea.
You are undeniably ignorant and not at all versed in libertarian theory as is, time and time again, clearly evident in your ridiculous commentary Saty.
ReplyDelete"...a libertarian state..."
An oxymoron if ever there was one considering the entire concept of libertarian philosophy is centered on the axiom of decentralization. If you ever took the time to read about it you'd know this and probably wouldn't resort to making this and similar comments that expose your lack of education and ignorance on the subject matter. "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt."
"It is untenable and unworkable in the reality of running any group..."
A) To say the current construct is or has born itself as tenable and workable...but more importantly;
B) your entire premise is false. Individuals do not need to be "run". That's what you don't fundamentally understand.
You've never taken the time or exhibited any inclination towards learning about libertarianism philosophy, short of maybe watching a couple of Glenn Beck episodes/videos (hilarious considering Glenn is not a libertarian by definition).
" the axiom of decentralization"..works in Somalia.
DeleteYou're a raving socialist. We get it. You like to be a slave to your master(s). You like to be under the thumb and the boot of an omnipotent being. You like to be controlled and "run".
ReplyDeleteIt works for you and it'll continue working for you until it no longer works for you. Every statist is expendable in the eyes of the state.
You have a boss?
DeleteYour boss or employer doesn't have monopolistic authority of you. If you leave your job you can get another.
DeleteIf you don't submit to authority of the state you go to prison or worse. Duh.
So, why not leave? Libertarians have a range of ideas and sometimes do not agree among themselves, but several consider countries where
Deletethere is more freedom. Typically-
Ireland
US
Switzerland
Canada
New Zealand
...apparently the US is in there because of minimal weapons laws, which
are stricter in the other example countries. On the other hand, US is the
only one on the list that does not have universal healthcare. Unfortunately, those more primitive countries, like in sub-Saharan Africa, the lack of "statism" seems to result in strongmen and gangs.
What does everyone have off today?
ReplyDeleteYup. Every day.
DeleteI have to say Saty there are many problems and unforeseen consequences with ObamaCare, hell even the new websites for the exchanges are glitchy as hell but you just simply gloss everything over as if ObamaCare is pie in the sky stuff. For BB more Lowry - maybe Harry Reid is the real problem.
ReplyDelete2.8 million folks first day...and the exchange is open for 6 months.
DeleteYou're questions is so retarded Saty. It's like asking why there aren't any Catholic priests that are atheists.
ReplyDeleteApparently Obama wants Americans to go fuck themselves.
ReplyDeleteHit a nerve I see. It's simple enough: if it could, it would, but it can't so it sha'n't. All the namecalling and condescension is so much bluster. Fact remains that it only works in dreams and novels. It's the Scientology of the political spectrum.
ReplyDeleteYou haven't hit a nerve with anything. You've merely put your own ignorance on display.
DeleteTime for a physics test?
DeleteI think it's time for another Sasquatch post. Have you seen the new footage? It's supposed to nail it. One researcher calls another researcher a wacko and you thought politics in Washington was bad.
ReplyDeleteIMO, if one Sasquatch researcher calls another a wacko, and the other replies in kind, they are both correct.
DeleteIncivility in the bug world. From the wiki article on the Black Widow Spider, genus Latrodectus:
Delete"In 1902 both F.P. Cambridge and Friedrich Dahl had revised the genus with each criticizing the other. Cambridge questioned Dahl's separating species on what he considered minor anatomical details and the latter dismissed the former as an 'ignoramus' ."
Bug world... what is this plague of stinkbugs I keep hearing about?
DeleteMeanwhile in libertarianism's darker regions
ReplyDeletethe long arm of the law moves in.
I read about Ulbricht yesterday in my morning paper. So much for the encrypted anonymity of the Tor network. I wonder what soapie's views on this matter are. You know with the exception of the 29-old physics nerd ordering a hit on one of his online customers/users he basically according to libertarians wasn't really doing anything wrong.
DeleteToday I downloaded 1972's "The Legend of Boggy Creek." Even if you're not into the Hairy Hominid this is a fun and campy movie. Of course it being the Deep South everybody has a gun. (***1/2)
ReplyDeleteRepresentative Ellmers (R-NC) told Raleigh TV today that she will be receiving her paycheck during the government shutdown. "I need my paycheck. That's the bottom line." That's actually the bottom line for 800,000 people, Rep. Ellmers.. why do you get yours but they don't?
ReplyDeleteYeah regardless of your own political POV you can't defend shit like this. You have to vote them out of office plain and simple.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
ReplyDeleteThe Texas congressman who voted to shut down the government, then chewed out a
ReplyDeletea park ranger working with no pay, pretty well sums up the situation for me.
I see not too many people %-wise signed up for the exchanges. Also seems there be hackers out there.
ReplyDeleteYou know the most tragic part of this gov't shutdown is we were so much closer to capturing a Sasquatch. The trail was so hot. I guess the Sasquatch Genome Project will have to wait.
ReplyDeleteKnew a guy, kindly fellow, but large, hirsute and a bit hulking. People would argue behind his back whether he was part Sasquatch or just half Neanderthal. Interesting comparing the TV shows on the subject whether there are more Sasquatch hunters or ghost hunters. Impressionable folks
Deletewatch the 'Messin' With Sasquatch' ads and become instant experts.
You be the judge but it doesn't do it for me.
ReplyDeleteI am a skeptic. But if the Yonkers City Council places a few thousand
Deletered light cams in the woods and some hairy creature races through on the yellow, leaping logs and giving the finger....
Impressionable folks
ReplyDeletewatch the 'Messin' With Sasquatch' ads and become instant experts.
Just like how they watch Fox News and become instant political pundits.
I just read a piece on Nat'l Review Online by Jonah Goldberg about Mrs. Obama's water campaign. For God's sake give her the water!
ReplyDeleteShe is pushing lots of water. Bloomberg will probably limit the size of the
Deletebottled water containers. Heck, the real problem is that infested Holy Water.
You know though Goldberg brings up a good point, bottled water was and still is so trendy no thanks to Michelle. The late George Carlin used to complain about this that everyone carries around a bottle of water these days like they have to be constantly hydrated. I like water, I like it alot but just like walking it can get boring.
ReplyDeleteMrs. Palin advises us to go out and shoot a moose...and most of us ignore her.
DeleteSee, this is where the bias becomes crazy. I told you before, I'm dying for the WH to come out in favor of breathing so Fox News can find a medical expert to refute the need for it.
ReplyDeleteWater: probably should have a label-too much isn't a good thing . Nor would one want acute hyponatremia ,
ReplyDeleteReminds me of that scandal in California when someone put out a toxicity alert
on dihydrogen oxide...the hideous H2O.
Have you ever read your city or town's annual water quality report? Tesh says to drink the tap over bottled water to save money. I'm not so sure.
ReplyDeleteOh sure, in fact water testing is in my repertoire. One of my areas was EPA, industrial wastewater, run-off, drilling, wells, streams. so I spent time outside my own lab at city and state labs. Now, don't get me going again....
Delete..but yeah, my tapwater is fine. Send me a sample of yours and we'll talk.
BTW, those HEPA filters you hook to your faucet? Watch out..once the filter
is full, it dumps into the outlet so you can get an awful contamination in your
soup. Gotta change those things regularly if your city water scares you.
Municipal water? I'll pass on the flouride, arsenic, lead, and other poisons thanks.
DeleteBerkey and Kinetico with added trace mineral drops.
My dentist said having all my original teeth going on 73 is due primarily to flouride. Of course too much is toxic and there are pros and cons ...and Berkey have their problems as well.
DeleteIt shouldn't surprise you that your dentist promotes the opinion of the ADA. 4 out of 5 dentists do.
DeleteWhile there have been studies that speak to the benefit of flouridation with respect to cavity prevention and building strong teeth and enamel, predominantly in children, why the hell anyone would opt to willingly ingest a known toxin in their body is not at all intelligent.
It's a psychosis that produces a domino effect for which the pharmaceutical industry profits.
Take a pill for this ailment and add 3 other side effects. Take another pill for one of the 3 side effects stemming from the previous pill and add 4 side effects. Wash, rinse, repeat.....
Also, your link regarding the Berkey filters has been disproven countless times over.
IMO, the Berkey filters are excellent, even trap virus down to under 100 nanometers; the problem, as with all filters, is the potential for leaks from
Deleteunseen cracks or insufficient seals. Nothing is quite perfect. Our city water is from 1400 ft. wells into the Russell Aquifer and is chlorinated and filtered..I always read the test analysis done quarterly by independent labs. For some industrial applications like plating and explosives, deionized water (free of all electrolytes) is preferred. But, I'm no connoisseur of water: deionized, softened, filtered all tastes the same to me (except that stuff in the Dakotas..too thin to plow-too thick to drink)
NYC has (at least did while I was growing up) the best tap water of any large city because of where it comes from. I know things are different now but their sources are still the same so I would venture to say it's still pretty awesome. People get elitist about their water but the empties are a huge part of what fills landfills especially if there's no convenient recycling resource. We have really great water here... our well is pretty deep.
ReplyDeleteThe Kensico Reservoir in Valhalla and Rye Lake which is connected, used to fish there alot from a johnboat. Very deep in areas like 100' near the dam and Rye Lake is pretty deep too. Lake trout reside here on the bottom. Never caught one but they have air bladders and if you do catch one intending on releasing it you're supposed to rub their belly. Who knew?
ReplyDeleteKensico is beautiful. As a kid we would drink stream water (I guess all kids do that) if we were out and happened to get thirsty. In those same streams I probably would still do it. We had really, really good water at our house when I was a kid.
ReplyDeleteAnd of course people who have any kind of issues with fluid retention, kidney issues, congestive heart failure or high blood pressure should stay away from water softeners due to the higher sodium content. Besides that it tastes like seawater.
ReplyDeleteAnd of course there are people who wax in condescension over toxins.. who willingly ingest alcohol and inhale carbon monoxide. It's all about picking your poison, isn't it?
ReplyDelete(gets up in front of group): "My name is Mary O'Toole and I'm a water abuser."
ReplyDeleteI see on Monday Pat Robertson announced that low-carb diets are against God's principles, and that if you buy from a halal butcher shop you're supporting terrorists. I guess Dr. Atkins is roasting in the fires of hell, no carb-free shirataki noodles there.
ReplyDeleteand did you see Disney has taken 427 part time workers and made them full time so they can get Obamacare? Go Mickey! Go Mickey!
ReplyDeleteThey probably can afford it.
DeleteYou know though with the recent and horrific mall massacre in Nairobi Kenya Islam is even more of a problematic faith system than ever. Sure most faiths like Christianity believe they're the one true faith but what other religion's adherents go to a friggin' mall just so they can separate the non-Muslims from the Muslims and kill all the non-Muslims??? So these things continue to happen with no real outcry from the mainstream Muslim community except the pro-forma stuff and really I can't judge a Robertson when someone makes such a statement. Just sayin'.
ReplyDeleteI visited a website that had a yearly listing of Pat's predictions, such as:
Delete1988 – Robertson said God told him to run for President. Apparently God did not tell him to win.
1996 – God told Robertson that Bill Clinton would not be elected for a second term. He also said that a terrorist with a nuclear weapon would strike within the United States.
1998 – Robertson said God would strike the United States with tsunamis, hurricanes, earthquakes, and “maybe even a meteor” due to Orlando, Florida’s city council voting to fly rainbow flags during a Gay Pride celebration. Orlando was never hit, though Virginia Beach, Robertson’s home, was. etc. & etc.
..but one of the comment struck me as incisive-
"God told ME that He has never spoken to Pat Robertson."
BB... I found this website today called stopabductions dot com.... they are looking for scientists et al to give them some cred.. I saw a picture of a voltmeter and directions for making these 'thought helmets' lined with 8 sheets of some material called Velostat, which I think is some kind of static-control coated film.... (one of the suppliers of said product is in Wilmington just a couple miles from our old house) and anyway, you being a scientist and all, I thought you might want to go check them out. .....dying to hear your opinion....
ReplyDeleteWhere do you find stuff like that?!
DeleteFriend sent me a link on Facebook. I guess they thought I might be in danger from alien abduction. Or maybe that I've already been abducted. Actually remind me to tell you a story one day about aliens. There was quite a big deal in the 80's where we lived with lots of people seeing Them.
DeleteAm familiar with Velostat, comes in sheets, tubes, even containers. It is basically a conductive rubber or plastic. We used some in the explosives business where static build-up is a serious situation..conductive shoes and conductive floors as well. It probably is used more often for electronics packaging, where stray static can cause
ReplyDeletemagnetic disarray on disks, etc.
As for the antt-alien hat, the testimonial says it all- "I haven't been abducted by an
alien since I started wearing it" From a strictly scientific standpoint, well, yes, perhaps small voltage dissipation prevents the alien from controlling a humans mind
(if we care to stretch the case to the ludicrous). However, the ears and forehead remain open to their evil disgusting mind probes, even with the hat. Sales must be slow, I haven't seen anyone around here wearing one. :)
