House ferals - Misty

Went from squirrel meat to Fancy Feast.  We began putting collars on them.  Always preferred the breakaway kind in case the cat gets snagged on something.  They always lose them.  The engraving on the tag isn't cheap either.  Misty was a favorite of the toms in the neighborhood until my sister finally took her to the vet.  No trapping involved.  Misty would make herself right at home in a nook of the house and simply put the critter in the carrier is our strategy.  Some vets now offer 3 year rabies shots but you have to ask for them.  All vets are big on gums and teeth.  They ALWAYS check out the mouth and usually recommend dental work which can run well over $1,000 in some cases.  Not saying they're wrong but most folk probably can't afford it.  Don't have pet insurance but it's worth considering.  My folks were in a pet food store once.  Another older couple shopping for their cat.  The wife was very finicky about what to get.  The old guy grumbled you don't even care about my dinner like that.  It's a cat thing you wouldn't understand.

  1. Family cats - zoomed with Son and family back in MN yesterday. They had their cat Happy with them. She had been sickly for years and they finally found the clue. The googled and found that pancreatic enzymes might help. He went to butcher shop and asked if they had a pancreas. Butcher says, "Yeah, what for?" Kid says "Why do you ask?" Took it home, cat wouldn't touch it. Neither would the family. Went to the vet and he gave them a bottle of powdered pancreatic enzyme. Happy liked Blue Diamond cat food.
The procedure is to sprinkle the enzyme and let it sit to disperse for
fifteen minutes. Meanwhile, Happy goes nuts waiting. Now a month later, their cat is finally filled out and living up to her name. Ever heard of that?

  2. No. Always something to learn.

Ever try to give a cat liquid medicine by mouth? May as well try to hammer a nail with your penis. Glad that I recently learned at the vet's you can give the cat the medicine mixed in their food. I've also heard yogurt is good for cats but mine don't eat it.

  3. You had described Alphie previously, a son of Misty. Got me to thinking about cat society. Are family members nice to each other vs strange ones?

  4. Interestingly enough Misty was very good at mothering them but when that was long gone and she'd come around there were times when she acted irritated with some of them. Had me perplexed. There were also times when Buddy the male cat would act like a bully to one of his sister cats. Maybe this mirrors human families. Cat psychology should really be the next niche field.

  5. Apparently Lions and sometimes Cheetahs live in family groups. Then
Tigers, Leopards and Jaguars are solitary. Guess I'll check out the cladistics on felinology.

  6. Cheetahs too even though they're the fastest land animals have to watch out for territorial leopards and lions which can kill them. Jaguars are said to have the most powerful jaws of any feline.

  8. House cat genetics is confusing to me. Like 80% of males are orange. (and some wag noted "all orange cats share one brain cell). The earliest known pet cat was buried with its owner on Cyprus 9300 yrs ago. The bioarcheologists think the little African wildcat hung around grain storage sites catching mice. Those with less fear of humans were gradually adopted. Female cats have 2 X chromosomes and only the females have tricolor coats. Which may
explain the Mistys and Buddies in your collection. Genetics is not my strong point, you need to fact check me.

  9. Fact-checking correct. Our vet said once a tricolor cat is always female. I thought he was talking smack.
