How do you keep the weight off around the holidays?

Wouldn't you know it everyone gave me snacks.  Oh yeah that Greek drink Ouzo 12, slept like a baby and dreamed all night and didn't want to get out of bed this morning to go to work.  I think the pitfall of many a diet is the holidays.  You have to partake, to not partake is depressing and not very social but the way I maintain is to go on a nice long walk on the morning of the holiday itself, don't eat much if anything before the main meal later on in the day and then when that's all digested do a brisk exercise routine in my room.  Won't knock off any pounds but hopefully you won't gain any.  So now the trick is is I gotta ration out the rest of my snacks in such a way so even if I don't lose I don't put it back on either.  Got a little Ouzo left, yeah baby!

  2. My great grandfather used to make ouzo in the bathtub in their apartment in Hell's Kitchen.

I've never had it, but my mother says it must only ever be had in little glasses the size of a thimble, so it must be some serious business.

I haven't eaten much crap this holiday season mostly because I've been working so much there wasn't time. For some reason I've been wanting fruit a lot lately. I did have some baklava (which probably would have gone well with the ouzo) but you can only eat a little of that before you start to drown in the honey.

Anyway, look at it like this... life can't all be one neverending privation.. you have to cut loose sometime...

  3. Ouzo 12?
That should help the Greek economy.
Never had the stuff, but I understand the sugar loading masks the ethanol until...bang!
On the other hand, the weight gain that started on Thanksgiving
got quite a boost the last few days. Been looking for the easiest way to burn it off.

  4. I think I did ok. I didn't deprive myself at all, ate like a normal person but I think what you do before and after helps keep the weight off. Ouzo has a nice licorice flavor as an aperitif and the Albanian guy at work told me put it in a small glass and add some water and watch it change color.

  5. I'm down with the flu past 2 days, I was 102.6 this morning, haven't really eaten much besides tea, broth, water and nyquil. Totally exhausted. I hope no one else gets this thing.

  6. z-Man, you are right about goodies
    that show up. Scandanavian, French
& Italian cookies with weird names,
    neighbors bringing elk sausage and
smoked turkey & riverrun salmon. Then with a housefull, everyone wants to eat all the time, and those of us with no willpower join right in. Then pile into the car and hit every restaraunt in town
during the week. Dang, I'm working up an appetite just writing about it....

  7. Here's why the country's fat. Years ago I worked in a deli on Thanksgiving day and it was busier than I thought it'd be. Made sandwiches all day for people. So you're gonna have a sandwich or two before the main course later on in the day? don't even get me started on sample stations.

  8. To be fair not everyone gets a big meal on the holidays. I didn't, not for Thanksgiving or Christmas either, cause of work. But I get your point.

  9. I actually think people even while dieting err on the side of eating too much. THEN when folks at work say things like are you a'ight? you lost so much weight they'll even eat a little more so as not to be talked about around the water cooler or coffee machine. Society is partly at fault.

  11. Plain kefir reminds me alot like buttermilk and I'm not down with that. I like the flavored varieties they have instead. Lately I've been going with a banana for lunch or maybe take a great old pear in the car with me to work.

  12. .."banana for lunch or maybe take a great old pear"..hmmm, sounds like feeding time at the Zoo primate section. ..are maple bars illegal yet?

  13. & that's just to maintain my current svelte figure, I'm not even talking about dieting. Sure I'll make up for it at dinnertime but it's like if I have a normal lunch the pounds start creeping back.
